Due to the increasing popularity of our scent-free soaps, and many unexpected recent large orders of scent-free soap, we are low or out of stock.

We are working daily to fill the racks and any listed "out of stock" soaps will be listed as "available" the moment they are cured.

Once soap is made we cure it or air dry it for a minimum of 4 weeks to make for a harder bar with less moisture content, resulting in a milder, longer lasting bar.

Thank you for your patience while the soap cures. Dam Good Soap is worth the wait!

From Gypsies to DGS

A personal story shared  from a DGS Soap Maker.

When I was a little girl, growing up in Liverpool, England, every Saturday morning would begin with our family treck to the local farmers market where we would meet up with aunts, uncles and many cousins. We would spend the better part of the day at the market each saturday with our time being happily consumed by shopping, eating and socializing with family and many family friends that we would bump in to.  Our walk to the market would have us  pass by a gypsy caravan park that was located very close to the market. Being the inquisitive curious child that I was, I would sneak away from the market and head over to the gypsy caravan park. I was fascinated with the gypsies. Absolutely mesmerized with them and their unique lifestyle.

My fascination for soap making actually began at this gypsy caravan park. One day when I popped (sneaked away from the mass family market gathering) over to visit the gypsies, a group of gypsy ladies were making soap. I being very chatty, inquisitive and just plain nosey, and probably somewhat annoying, began spurting out my 100 questions at them.  After watching the ladies take turns stirring that big o'l pot of soap with what seemed massive to my memory, the largest spoon  i had ever laid eyes on  as well as my sheer fascination that people actually made soap, stayed with me and was embedded in my sub-conscious mind until the day I made my very first batch of soap.

So you can thank the gypsies for the birth of Dam Good Soap.

Why we do what we do

Soap making is . . .

All of the above

I know, crazy right?   A dam good kind of crazy though!

The kind of crazy goodness that benefits us, you, our families, our friends, our neighbours and those less fortunate in shelters, emergency care programs and low income families that we donate our soap to. And of course Dam Good Soap is good for the earth helping us maintain Canada's clean green image.

SOAP . . .

Dam Good SOAP  is to the body, what laughter is to the soul.

Scent is such a personal thing. Because of our unique associations with smell, we have different preferences. While some may love scented soap, we also recognize there are others that do not. We at Dam Good Soap respect that. So much so that we have formulated an entire line of scent free soaps for our customers that both demand and deserve to have that choice.

At Dam Good Soap we understand that people have scent sensitivities, allergies to scent or just simply prefer to use a non scented soap.  It is with this in mind that we have purposely, passionately, thoughtfully, meticulously and creatively designed a line of 15 different soaps we have aptly named  "Scent-Free".

And a favorite quote I cannot resist including into this post from an extraordinary lady who taught the world to respect people who are blind and deaf.

Smell is a potent wizard that transports us across thousands of miles and all the years we have lived. The odors of fruits waft me to my southern home, to my childhood frolics in the peach orchard. Other doors, instantaneous and fleeting, cause my heart to dilate joyously or contract with remembered grief. Even as I think of smells, my nose is full of scents that start to awake sweet memories of summers gone and ripening fields far away.

~ Helen Keller.

Cold-processed soap

For over 20 years we have made every single bar of Dam Good Soap using the traditional cold-process method of soap making. Cold-process is our preferred method of soap making because very little to no heat is required in the process. The cold-process method of soap making requires extremely precise measuring of all ingredients and accurate temperature monitoring. Stainless steel equipment and tools are used extensively throughout our manufacturing space for both function & sanitation purposes. We love what we do and are very pleased that you do too!

What is Soap?

Soap is something millions of us use several times a day yet never put much thought into. So what exactly is soap?

The short answer . . . soap is a cleansing agent. Soap is the end result of combining sodium hydroxide (solid soap) or potassium hydroxide (liquid soap) with oil or fat.

The long answer . . . In chemistry, soap is a salt caused from a complex chemical reaction. This chemical reaction is called saponification. Saponification is an exothermic (gives off heat) chemical reaction that occurs when oil/fat (fatty acids) come into contact with lye (a base) So basically saponification literally means "turning into soap". The by-products of this saponification reaction is the formation of glycerin and soap. Glycerin is a humectant (attracts moisture from the air) moist skin = happy skin!

It is important to note there is NO lye left in properly made soap. It is also a fact that soap cannot be made without lye. No lie!
